Nick Steffey
Stewart H. Steffey, Jr.
Chairman & CEO, Narragansett Bay Insurance Company

Nick, the founding shareholder of NBIC Holdings, Inc., has 35 years of insurance expertise, including the successful building of Liberty International Holdings, Inc. (a subsidiary of the Liberty Mutual Group), serving as founder, president and CEO from 1993 to 1998. He successfully revamped Reinsurance Australia Ltd., while serving as CEO in 1999 and 2000. Nick also worked for 15 years with CIGNA Corporation in various executive capacities and, before that, for 10 years with the Chubb Corporation. He currently serves on the boards of the Pawtucket Foundation, Memorial Hospital and the Pawtucket YMCA. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Pace University and master’s degree in finance from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Dr. Fridlyand joined Soros Strategic Partners in May of 2005. He currently represents Soros on the Board of Directors of – oil and gas exploration company Stonegate LLC, life reinsurer Aurigen Re and Syndicate Re, A.I. Syndicate Re A.I. is an insurance company domiciled in Puerto Rico that provides reinsurance-to-close to companies in Lloyd's market. Dr. Fridlyand is also an observer on the board of Glacier Re, a Switzerland based specialty and catastrophe reinsurer, and is an observer on another oil and gas exploration company Phoenix Explorations.

Dr. Fridlyand studied mathematics at Moscow Forest Technical Institute. In 1991, he came to the United States to study turbulence and chaos theory at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering and received his Ph.D. there in 1995. That same year Dr. Fridlyand founded an Internet infrastructure company that quickly merged with recently founded SoftAware Networks Inc. In 2000, SoftAware Networks Inc. was sold to Digital Island Inc., a publicly traded internet infrastructure company, which a year later was acquired by Cable and Wireless plc, a 150 year old publicly traded UK company. Dr. Fridlyand stayed on to lead M&A in the areas of Networking, Storage, Security, Computing, and Professional Services.

Mr. Glanville has a combination of investing and operating experience. From September 2003 until he joined Pine Brook, Mr. Glanville was Senior Vice President – Financial and Treasury Services for Arch Capital Group, Ltd. (“Arch Capital”). At Arch Capital, he was involved in capital raising, capital allocation, business development, investment management/treasury and internal audit. In addition, Mr. Glanville was the principal architect and lead negotiator for Arch Capital’s $1 billion Flatiron Re sidecar, one of the largest reinsurance structures established following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma. In 2006, he also served as advisor to the founder and Chairman of Aeolus Ltd. with regard to its formation and capitalization. Previously, he spent over four years at Warburg Pincus (1999 to 2003) where he focused on financial services investing, particularly in the commercial finance and insurance areas. He played a significant role in executing Warburg Pincus’ 2001 investment in Arch Capital and served on Arch Capital’s board of directors. In 1993, Mr. Glanville founded a successful emerging markets financial services and investment boutique, FA Services LLC, based in Moscow, where he was the lead partner and served as the CFO of several Eastern European firms, including (from 1997 to early 1999) APP, a Warburg Pincus portfolio company. He also spent four years with Morgan Stanley in corporate finance and M&A based in New York and Tokyo (1988 to 1992). Mr. Glanville holds an A.B. summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, in American History from Princeton University.

Geoff’s responsibilities include acquisitions, operations, legal, compliance and administration. He has more than 20 years of financial and insurance experience. He was previously an executive vice president at Liberty Mutual Group with responsibility for managing subsidiaries with premiums exceeding $2.5B, and the M&A group, where he led over two-dozen multi-million and billion dollar transactions. He also was a senior manager with the Connecticut practice of Deloitte and Touche. He currently serves on the boards of R.I. Medical Malpractice J.U.A.; Slater Mill Museum; Friends of Boston College Rugby and Notre Dame Academy. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Siena College; an Executive MBA from University of Michigan; a JD from Western New England College, and a LLM from Boston University School of Law. Geoff also holds a CPA designation.

Eric W. Leathers

Mr. Leathers has over 14 years of financial services experience, including 11 years focusing exclusively on making private equity investments in the sector. Prior to joining Pine Brook, he was a Partner with Capital Z Partners (“Capital Z”), a leading private equity investor in the financial services industry with over $2.1 billion under management. During his time with Capital Z, Mr. Leathers was responsible for sourcing and structuring transactions across multiple sectors of the financial services industry and served as a director of Universal American Corp., Permanent General Corp., SBJ Group, LTD, USI Holdings and several smaller companies. Prior to joining Capital Z, Mr. Leathers was an investment banker with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, where he focused on mergers and acquisitions and private equity transactions in the financial services sector. Mr. Leathers holds a B.S. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and a B.A. in History from the University of Pennsylvania’s College of Arts and Sciences.

John D. Nichols

Mr. Nichols is the former President of RenaissanceRe Ventures Ltd. where he oversaw the business development and management of RenaissanceRe’s Joint Ventures and Venture Capital businesses. He joined Renaissance Reinsurance Ltd. as a member of the Finance group in 1995 and served as Executive Vice President of RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd. since February 2003 and President of Renaissance Underwriting Managers Ltd. since February 2000. Mr. Nichols also held various positions at Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company where he was responsible for financial reporting and property claims. He also worked in Finance at Monarch Capital Corporation and was a Certified Public Accountant with the firm of Matson, Driscoll and D'amico, where he specialized in audits of business interruption insurance claims for insurance companies. Mr. Nichols holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Babson College.

Srdjan Vukovic joined Soros Strategic Partners in August of 2006. Mr. Vukovic is actively involved with Soros’s investments in insurance and financial services, including Aurigen Re, a Bermuda based life reinsurer, and Glacier Re, a Switzerland based specialty and catastrophe reinsurer, among others. Prior to joining Soros, Mr. Vukovic was a top ranked analyst in the investment banking division of Merrill Lynch. Mr. Vukovic graduated summa cum laude from New York University with a dual major in actuarial science and finance. Mr. Vukovic was also the recipient of the Jacob Marschak Memorial Award For Excellence In Quantitative Analysis or Econometrics.

William I. Riker

With our sincere admiration and thanks, we dedicate this website to the memory of William I. Riker, who was a member of the NBIC Board of Directors and a valued advisor to the NBIC management team. Mr. Riker passed away in May, 2010. Mr. Riker had a distinguished career in insurance including serving as the former President and Chief Underwriting Officer of RenaissanceRe Holdings, Ltd. In addition to serving as company president, Mr. Riker held the previous positions of Chief Operating Officer of RenaissanceRe and President and Chief Executive Officer of Glencoe Group Holdings Ltd., the Dallas-based segment of RenaissanceRe. Prior to joining RenaissanceRe, Mr. Riker was Vice President of Applied Insurance Research (AIR), Inc., and he also was a Senior Vice President for the New York based reinsurer, American Royal Re. Mr. Riker was a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, and he held a B.S.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University.
